SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

Togo is heavily dependent on agriculture, but with its economy tied to the export of cash crops often even basic foodstuffs must be imported. This is a serious challenge in a country where 55% of people live below the international poverty line and many struggle to afford the daily necessities to support themselves and their families. Exacerbating the issue of poverty, there is a severe lack of access to education and healthcare amongst Togo’s rural communities, with many rural schools and clinics being forced to operate without essential basic equipment, and diseases such as malaria spreading rampantly.

For almost 20 years our NGO partners have been active in Togo trying to bring about change by strengthening the capacity of local communities. They work with villages to address the challenges that the people are facing head on, establishing educational programmes to teach skills and raise awareness of disease prevention, equipping schools and clinics with necessary tools and support, and building facilities necessary for effective sanitation and clean water access. Using the goods that they received in this shipment, our partners have been able to provide such assistance to the village of Goubi.

“Previously only 60 patients per year came to Goubi clinic for healthcare or pregnancy check-ups, but since the arrival of the new medical equipment the number of patients visiting has increased by 80%”– NGO Coordinator

(Above 1st pic) A new born baby rests on one of the hospital beds received in this shipment and provided to our partners’ clinic. (Above 2nd pic) A nurse at the clinic working comfortably from his new desk and chair donated as part of this shipment.

Before this shipment was received, Goubi was confronted with various problems which were outlined by our partners: Over 91.5% of the population were poor and lived on less than US$1 per day, less than 7% of the pupils in the village had a school bag, less than 20% of the population had a decent footwear, the very old and small clinic was not equipped, and less than 1% of the population had a suit.

This shipment has greatly contributed to the reduction of poverty in Goubi in many ways, for example by providing sewing machines, which are being used by local women to sew clothes to sell. Furthermore, the various goods donated to the clinic have contributed to reducing the death rate in the village, and many children have been born safely since the shipment was received.

The donations received have contributed to the development of the village and have directly affected the lives of over 2600 people, saving them around US$25,000 in collective investments. These goods are greatly appreciated, and will continue to provide benefits to the people of Goubi for many years to come.

FURTHER IMPACT

“My name is Mary and I am a nurse at Goubi Clinic. I am grateful for this donation to our clinic because previously it was difficult without appropriate hospital furniture. Now we have brand new medical beds and our babies are resting peacefully” – Obiadje Mary, pictured above

SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

While Cameroon’s economy and quality of life continue to improve, it’s people in the rural areas who can be left behind. “Most students in rural communities can hardly afford school materials like books, pens, pencils, etc.” wrote Crossroads’ partners, “and many are yet to be introduced to ICT due to lack of such equipment in rural schools.” They see young people, strong and ready to work, forming small collective farming groups, but their lack of business knowledge and modern equipment continually holds them back from escaping the poverty cycle. Children without the most basic necessities like clothes, are more vulnerable to diseases and injuries.

Our NGO partners in Cameroon have been working in the region for almost 50 years to help rural towns and villages overcome these challenges and build strong self-sustaining communities. Goods from Crossroads’ shipment helped their educational programmes including skills courses, business workshops, and a higher education library,  health clinics, disability support groups, and orphanages.

“With the computers sent by Crossroads we have been able to set up a modern ICT lab and a conference hall where most of our meetings are held. This has helped save over US$3500 and has already benefitted more than 300 students” – NGO Director

(Above) Students make use of the new ICT lab established with computers received in this shipment from Crossroads.

(Above) The higher education library is now fully supported with education materials and resources.

Incredibly, our partners estimate that the shipment sent by crossroads has already directly benefitted 1000 people, having been distributed carefully amongst the many projects they support. Here are just some of the ways that the goods have been used so far:

  • Refrigerators have helped conserve supplies more effectively, reducing food waste and saving over US$500 per month.
  • Toys and games have been supplied to nurseries and primary schools, boosting enrolment significantly in areas where recent conflict had greatly reduced attendance.
  • Text books and educational materials have equipped the higher education library with access to modern curricula, allowing the US$850 that had been set aside for this purpose to finance a new internet project for library users.

(Above) Children at this orphanage received a supply of new toys through our partner’s distribution efforts.

As our partner’s organisation continues its distribution these goods, and the many more that were included in the shipment, will continue to benefit even more communities across Cameroon.

FURTHER IMPACT

(Above 1st pic) A community who had been displaced by conflict in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions receive essential goods including clothing and footwear. (Above 2nd pic) Staff working for our NGO partners have enjoyed an improvement to their facilities, with computers and furniture boosting moral and productivity throughout their offices.

New refrigerators ensure food can be stored more safely and less is wasted. As a result, student food supplies are no longer such a financial burden.

Through our partners’ distribution, the ‘Football for Change’ programme received a full set of new kits, allowing more young people to enjoy the sport.

Students at one primary school show their enthusiasm for the new school supplies and toys that they received from this shipment. Students had experienced a long period of absence due to conflict in the region and they are now very excited to return to their learning.

SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

When prisoners are released in Zambia, all too often they enter a new state of imprisonment, locked into poverty, as they find nobody will employ them, and they can be shunned by family and community. This leaves thousands of former prisoners without any way to rebuild their lives, even when they are ready to work hard and make a fresh start. “Most of them are destitute,” write our partners.

Life in prison: “The conditions in or places where inmates sleep can bring tears to a person,” wrote our partners. “Their clothes are mostly in tatters. They usually do not know where the next meal is coming from. The wives either turn to prostitution and 90% of the prisoners find their wives re-married and their families scattered when they get released from prison. Many of their children do not go school due to stigma and lack of clothing.”

Crossroads shipped to an NGO partner who works in nearly all Zambia’s major correctional facilities, to give prisoners counsel and support, as well as meeting material needs of those who have nobody to bring clothing, blankets or medicines. For prisoners who are released, they help with advice, material goods and small business loans to help people start again.

“You have touched the hearts of prisoners, ex-prisoners and their families. The joy you have put in their hearts will remain for a long time.” – NGO staff

Our shipment was a huge boost to our partners’ operations. It included a large quantity of clothing, which is now being distributed to prisoners who have very little. “Their clothes are mostly in tatters,” our partners said.

A fresh start: New clothes from Crossroads’ shipment are helping prisoners, ex-prisoners and their families rebuild their lives from the ground up. Our partners help the rehabilitation process with counselling, small loans and small business support for ex-prisoners.

Those released from prison quite often emerge with no possessions at all, and need support finding their place again in the world, determined to start afresh. New sets of clothing and business suits from our shipment are helping them regain a sense of dignity, and to present well for job interviews or important community events. Our partners also distributed clothing to wives and children left on the outside struggling on low income, often highly stigmatised by their community.

“The offices look very gorgeous…they have been transformed. The organization has saved more than US$7,500 in furniture and computers.” – NGO staff

Also included in the shipment were computers, office furniture and other goods that equipped their offices, helping them do their work better and more efficiently. “This has boosted and motivated moral of the organisational staff,” wrote the director.

Thank you for helping Crossroads serve some of society’s most neglected. We are so grateful to all donors and volunteers who contributed to this shipment.

Offices transformed: Computers, office equipment, furniture and other goods for our partners’ offices were a great encouragement and a strategic investment in their work.

Clothing and essentials from the shipment are helping our partners reach out to the children of prisoners and ex-prisoners. Often these children are impoverished, stigmatised and may miss school for lack of clothing.

SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

While Zambia’s cities are steadily growing economically, up to 78% of Zambians in rural areas are still living in poverty. Simply finding enough to eat each day is a daily struggle for many, so further needs like education, vocational training and reliable employment are difficult to meet.

“What a joy filled our hearts when we saw the truck!” – NGO staff

This shipment injected renewed hope into the programmes run by our partners in rural Zambia, such as supporting community schools, people with HIV and bridging the digital divide with computer education. Computers from Crossroads enabled them to set up an internet café, which is now offering much-needed community services like printing, photocopying and typing, as well as training youth in computer skills and giving local people a place to access to the internet.

“As a result of the shipment, we were able to open an internet café in the community.”

Clothing: Community caregivers have adopted striped dresses from Crossroads’ shipment as their uniform, when they make their rounds visiting clients in villages.

IT equipment: Computers from Crossroads have set up an internet café, empowering local youth in computer skills, as well as giving the community a place to access the internet, printing and photocopying, supporting local businesses.

Blankets and bedding: 14 year old Monica lives with her brother, aged 22. Their parents died, leaving them battling to make a life for themselves. “On behalf of my family I would like to send appreciation for remembering us in this cold season by giving us blankets,” she said.

Books and toys: “As a result of this shipment,” wrote our partners, “our children now have the opportunity to learn how to read. In this part of the world, reading culture is very poor. Thanks to the books, toys and musical instruments, the number of children in this school programme has more than doubled.

A corporate team from BNP Paribas worked hard to load the shipment in Hong Kong.

Other goods were distributed to some of the area’s most vulnerable, like blankets, clothes, books, school supplies and shoes to 509 orphans and vulnerable children and 350 impoverished families. We’re grateful to all who helped us invest in the future of this Zambian community.

FURTHER IMPACT

“What joy filled our hearts when we saw the truck!” said our partners. The much-anticipated arrival of the container was a day of excitement for the community.

70 year old Bettina has lost all 6 of her children and is left with no relatives to support her. She appreciates the ongoing care of Crossroads’ partners, and received a blanket and other goods from this shipment.

These community workers visit people living with HIV to offer care, counselling and advice on nutrition. Bicycles from Crossroads’ shipment are helping them visit HIV-affected villagers, sometimes transporting them by bike to their medical appointments.

Widows and elderly people can be left highly vulnerable when younger, stronger family members and breadwinners die of HIV-related diseases. Goods from this shipment helped our partners give much-needed necessities to impoverished, vulnerable elderly in the community.

SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

The village of Eyangntui in Cameroon is one of the most remote and disadvantaged communities in the region. People make a living through small-scale farming or petty trading, and young people grow up feeling they have little hope of rising out of poverty.

“Before the shipment, we lacked school chairs, desks, office furniture and stationary items. We were unable to supply relief items to communities in crises.”  – NGO staff

We shipped to an NGO in Cameroon, staffed by local people seeking to invest in their region’s youth. They run vocational training with courses like computer skills and tailoring, and they offer health services to communities like Eyangntui that lack formal health clinics. The shipment arrived in 2013, but now, several years later, we have received further feedback from our partners showing the longer-term impact that this capital investment of goods has made.

The container arrives in rural Cameroon, loaded with furniture, clothes, stationery, wheelchairs and other supplies.

In communities with high unemployment, young people are desperate for training in job skills. School furniture, AV equipment, office furniture and stationery have equipped this vocational training centre so that 50 new students each year can access life-changing skills and support to find work.

“Now, our vocational training centre has chairs and desks, our library has good books, orphans, widows and families in need received relief items from the shipment.”

“The school furniture has helped us to accommodate 50 new students each year in our vocational training centre,” they wrote. Clothing and household goods were an immense help to people struggling without basic essentials. “1,500 people have received items for personal and household use, and now we have carried out football for social change programs which changed the lives of 4,000 people.”

Wheelchairs from the shipment helped several people with disabilities find mobility for the first time, and goods for school students have also helped keep children in school. “Our outreach provided 200 orphans and vulnerable children with school needs such as school bags, stationary items which enable them to attend school and function effectively in class,” they wrote.

Medical supplies such as first aid kits and mattresses were gratefully received, with some items never seen before in their communities. Thank you for helping us to invest in the health and future of communities in Cameroon.

Members of the village women’s association work tirelessly to improve life for their children and their village community, but they do so with very few resources. “They lacked good bags,” wrote staff. “They didn’t have durable cooking utensils, and they didn’t have stationery for their correspondence. The shipment from Crossroads provided some of these much-needed items, thanks to donations of goods from Hong Kong partners.

“Through the shipment our humanitarian outreach provided 200 orphans and vulnerable children with school needs such as school bags and stationery items which enabled them to attend school and function effectively in class.” – NGO staff

SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

In the region of Kenya that received this shipment, 65% of people in live on less than $1/day. Most of the 850,000 inhabitants are peasant farmers, owners of small, informal businesses that bring in very little income, or unemployed. Young people in the slum areas are largely unemployed and in desperate need of training and income-generating projects.

“Job-creation among the youth is needed due to the high population without jobs leading to alcoholism, drug-addiction, and high rate of early pregnancies, HIV/AIDS and desperation among them. Sports or recreation project would assist the youth.” – NGO staff

Crossroads’ partner in Kenya asked us for a container of goods that would help them continue their work, and expand their various programs in the slums of Kisumu and surrounding areas.

Since the shipment was received, hundreds of lives have been touched both directly and indirectly.

Before our NGO partner had to hire office equipment, but after receiving the shipment they now have their own office furniture and office equipment.

Impact of the shipment:

  • Computers allowed a training centre to be set up.
  • Hospital beds distributed to a community health centre have meant more people can be admitted and have their own bed, rather than patients sharing two to a bed.
  • Clothes and shoes were distributed to over 300 families, and hygiene items such as toothbrushes were given to school children.

CROSSROADS COMPUTERS OPEN DOORS FOR YOUTH

Charles often feels like he’s fighting a losing battle. He’s a youth worker with Kenyan young people, and each day he sees teens and young men who have fallen into crime, drug dealing and drug abuse because they have nothing to do, and no money to live on.

Charles dreamed of starting a computer centre for training and job creation, to help these youth find a different way to live, but he didn’t have the resources to buy equipment like computers and furniture. When Crossroads’ shipment arrived, Charles finally had the goods needed for the project. He’s now training and employed youth from the community, giving them new opportunities, and showing them they can hope for something more than a hand-to-mouth existence.

A total of 30 youths from the community are full-members of the centre for skills training to prepare them for jobs and an income.

SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

It is estimated that just over a third of Cameroon’s population live below the poverty line, with many people having to survive on less than US$1 per day. In the face of this poverty, healthcare has become a serious issue, and Cameroonians frequently face difficulties accessing medical services due to inadequate facilities, a lack of health centres and unaffordable fees. Furthermore, as is often the case in areas stricken by poverty, children in Cameroon are amongst the most affected. Across the country the child labour rate is high, particularly in rural areas, and many children are missing out on the opportunity to attend school and engage in stimulating play and recreation activities.

Our NGO partners are working in Cameroon to help address these challenges. They are involved with supplying goods and offering support to a wide range of poverty alleviation and healthcare initiatives, all of which have benefitted from the shipment that was sent out by Crossroads.

“Cameroonians are used to donors dumping stuff on them that is no longer useful. But getting brand new boots? Oh, I wish you all could see the smiles on their faces!” – NGO Director

The goods that our partners received have already been put to use producing lasting benefits for many communities; clothing and household goods have been distributed to vulnerable families, office equipment has been used to improve NGO facilities, and books, toys and games have been provided to children who had previously had none. Perhaps the most significant impact of the shipment, however, has been to allow the completion of a specialist children’s ward in the Buea Hospital. The hospital beds, oxygen concentrators and neonatal beds that were sent by Crossroads have saved the hospital almost US$20,000 and were very gratefully received by the doctors there.

(Above) Hospital beds and an infant incubator that have been put to good use in the new hospital children’s ward

(Above) Children in the city of Bamenda enjoy reading some of the new books they have received.

(Above) With new equipment and games, children are finding new opportunities for play and learning.

Looking forward, our partners have recently signed a contract with the government allowing them use of a research lab for the development of medicines and vaccines in Cameroon. Their lab, which has also been equipped with goods received in this shipment, is the start of a new phase of projects that they are now able to undertake. Although it has now been almost two years since this container first arrived in Cameroon, the feedback from our partners has been focussed on how enduring its impact has been. This response is best summarised by their director –

“It blows my mind that Cameroonians still talk about this container, that they still point to items from it and say how they are used and appreciated”

FURTHER IMPACT

“We have collected many donations and brought them to Cameroon in the past, but it has never reached up to the level and impact that this container had!”  – NGO Director

SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

Crossroads’ partners on this shipment wrote of the endless factors that keep people trapped in poverty: unreliable electricity supply, limited clean water, leading to outbreaks of disease, and poor roads and transport in rural areas, so that farmers find it hard to get produce to outside markets. “Most families can’t afford higher education,” they wrote, “and healthcare services and supplies are a major challenge.”

“Early marriage, slavery and sexual exploitation are common paths for girls without education.”– NGO director

Crossroads’ partners have been working for more than a decade to invest in development across all aspects of their local communities with programmes like health education, reaching 250,000 people, and socio-economic support and empowerment reaching 3,000 people. Since beginning their work, they’ve seen improvements like a reduction in youth crime, more stable family networks, and better access to health care.

(Above) Volunteers from the community and our full-time team loaded goods into the container at Crossroads’ site in Hong Kong, May 2018.

(Above) Unloaded boxes from the shipment are now being sorted, processed, unpacked, and distributed, so that they can begin investing in lives.

(Above 1st pic) Staff from our partner NGO in Cameroon begin sorting through clothes for distribution to their target communities. (Above 2nd pic) Donated uniforms from Hong Kong are already equipping youth sports teams, where football is an incredibly valuable way to reach young boys and girls at risk, creating opportunities for mentorship, leadership training, health and mental well-being.

This shipment included goods to help equip and expand their projects, such as:

  • Audio-visual equipment for training and education
  • Toys, sports equipment and educational supplies for community schools and youth sports projects
  • Office furniture, computers and office supplies to improve administration
  • Hundreds of books for schools and libraries
  • Beds and bedding to equip schools and clinics
  • Computers and monitors for digital literacy training

We look forward to further feedback from these partners, as the goods are distributed and put to use.

SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

Ranking just 151 out of 189 on the Human Development Index, Cameroon is facing significant challenges. Although the people of Cameroon do not suffer with poverty to the same extent as some of their neighbours, slow economic development and poor infrastructure mean that access to education, healthcare and employment opportunities are lacking, particularly in rural areas. Exacerbating these issues is the tension and violence in the country’s English speaking regions, where growing conflict has led to the internal displacement of many thousands of people.

In response to Cameroon’s challenges, our NGO partners in the region are working to improve access to education and primary healthcare through a number of different programmes. They are also involved with providing direct assistance and support to those who have lost their homes or been forced away as a result of the internal conflict. The educational projects run by our partners are comprehensive and are designed to provide students with skills that can provide them with real opportunities, they range from primary school and basic literacy schemes right through to young adult IT and vocational training centres. It is in supporting these educational programmes, and the internally displaced persons outreach, that this shipment has made the biggest difference.

“The shipment came when it was highly needed. It has helped to address many problems, especially those faced by the internally displaced persons”  NGO director

(Above) Forced to leave her home after it was burnt down during the escalating violence, Mary* was left with nothing. Here she is receiving a donation of new clothes that arrived as part of this shipment and, thankfully, through our partners she has found the support she needed to start rebuilding her life. (* Name changed)

(Above) Children gather in one their classroom at one of the primary schools run by our partners.

The goods that were received in this shipment have had some very clear and immediate impacts on the beneficiaries who our partner’s support. Here are just a few examples:

  • Modern desks and chairs have allowed space for 100 more students to attend our partner’s primary school.
  • New toys and games have found a home being enjoyed by over 200 children as part of our partner’s nursery programme.
  • Much-needed computers have renewed our partner’s IT centre, allowing the project’s expansion to over 400 students.
  • Vital clothes and mattresses have provided relief to over 100 internally displaced people, many of whom lost everything escaping violence and conflict.

Without shipments like this one, their incredible successes would not be possible. We, and our partners, are endlessly grateful for all who contributed to make this shipment a reality.
