SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

Crossroads’ partners on this shipment wrote of the endless factors that keep people trapped in poverty: unreliable electricity supply, limited clean water, leading to outbreaks of disease, and poor roads and transport in rural areas, so that farmers find it hard to get produce to outside markets. “Most families can’t afford higher education,” they wrote, “and healthcare services and supplies are a major challenge.”

The shipment sent by Crossroads included goods to help equip and expand their projects, such as:

  • Audio-visual equipment for training and education
  • Toys, sports equipment and educational supplies for community schools and youth sports projects
  • Office furniture, computers and office supplies to improve administration
  • Hundreds of books for schools and libraries
  • Beds and bedding to equip schools and clinics
  • Computers and monitors for digital literacy training.

“It is difficult to express in a report the feelings of the beneficiaries. Everywhere we went brought so much joy and a feeling of relief. They felt love and this boosted their self-esteem.” – NGO staff

(Above) Volunteers help to unload the goods from the shipment which had arrived at our partner NGO’s offices.

(Above) Excitement at the arrival of the goods was expressed in dance and song at one school that benefited!

(Above) The educational goods were distributed to our partners’ network of schools, where things like school desks and chairs, stationery and books were received with jubilation by the under-resourced teachers.

“There are many orphans and other vulnerable youth who do not go to school because of lack of means,” wrote our partners. “We have designed a vocational training programme to benefit this group of children and enable them live independent lives and contribute to the economic development of our country.” Computers from the shipment are helping our partners give training to these children that would otherwise be out of reach.

SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

Papua New Guinea is a nation of stark contrasts. Situated in the tropical southwestern Pacific, it’s one of the world’s most culturally diverse countries, and rich in natural resources, but violence and brutality are major social issues. The nation’s capital, Port Moresby, ranks among the world’s five ‘least liveable’ cities, due to gang violence, murder and rape. Thousands of small agricultural communities live in remote areas where it’s difficult to access everyday goods let alone healthcare or emergency services.

When Crossroads shipped to Papua New Guinea, it was not without challenges, including a serious earthquake that hit the highlands in 2018. Thanks to the hard work of our partners, though, the shipment was safely delivered to two secondary schools in remote communities.

The shipment included computers, school furniture and books for school libraries, all of which created a huge impact on the two school campuses. “The project was inspiring!” wrote staff. “The primary aim was to establish our first computer laboratory and school library.” They used the goods to create a brand new information centre, where students can now learn IT skills and connect to the wider world.

“The project impacted positively on the secondary school students, and boosted their overall morale, spirits, excitement, aspirations, dreams and hopes!” – NGO staff

(Above) The laptops, TV screens and other computer hardware were gratefully received, helping set up the school’s first computer lab. 40 cartons of books filled the new library. Chairs and other furniture saved the schools US$1500. The shipment also contained bicycles, mattresses, shoes, toys and backpacks which were distributed to the students.

The multiplier effect of the donation has been significant.  They estimate that more than 1500 secondary school students have been directly impacted by the computer lab; over 9000 students impacted altogether, and 20,000 local people have benefitted.  In fact, they see the impact moving widely to the whole of Papua New Guinea, as the students have more skills to serve locally and nationally, building the foundation for more productive lives and better futures.

SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

As a largely agricultural country which has struggled to develop economically, poverty remains a persistent challenge in Malawi. Over 80% of the population are considered ‘working poor’, which means that even though they are employed they earn less than US$3.10 a day. Poor infrastructure means that access to education and healthcare in Malawi are both lacking, and the country’s problems have been exacerbated by the fact that it is one of the world’s worst hit regions for HIV/AIDS; over one million children in Malawi have been orphaned by the disease.

Our NGO partners in the region are working tirelessly to provide support and relief to the people of Malawi. Their vision is to build a society where people’s livelihoods are secure, and there is equal access to quality schools and health facilities for all. In order to achieve this, our partners coordinate a series of programmes which aim to improve social and economic development, empower local communities, and provide material aid to the most vulnerable in society. Their projects encompass schooling, health and hygiene education, elderly care, orphanage support, and more.

“We had a very big problem with lacking hospital equipment at our health centre, but the beds and mattresses from this shipment have rescued us from this situation and we have already seen maternity services improved”  – Health & Social Services Administrator

(Above left) New hospital beds and mattresses arrive at a local health clinic. (Above right) Desks and chairs are unloaded at a local primary school.

(Above) New bikes are providing children with easier access to schools, and new opportunities to enjoy their free time!

The goods donated in this shipment have had a huge impact on the lives of the people who our partners support and even the shipping container itself has proven useful, finding a new life as office space at a youth training centre. Here are just a few examples of the ways in which these goods have touched people’s lives so far:

  • Computers have allowed the opening of new IT training facilities, allowing young people the opportunity to develop new and important skills.
  • Hospital beds and mattresses have drastically improved the quality of care in many local health centres.
  • Books and educational materials have allowed the opening of three community libraries, accessible by over 9,000 people.

Our partners estimate that 4,200 people have been directly impacted by this shipment, and over 30,000 indirectly impacted.

SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

Children from mountainous tribal villages in Vietnam come top of the list for the wrong reasons. According to UNICEF, they’re the most likely children in the country never to attend school, and those who do, tend to drop out sooner than their urban peers. In the mountainous district of Quang Nam, in Vietnam, many families are very poor. Parents are eager for their children to get ahead, and escape poverty, and they know that education is the key.

Crossroads shipped to a part of Quang Nam province where most of the village schools operate out of temporary buildings without proper desks and chairs, and it’s not an environment that makes it easy to study.

These villagers decided they wanted to rally together and write a different story for their children. “Together with a little support from the government, they built some good school rooms,” wrote our partners, who run projects in the villages. “But they were stuck for a source to buy desks and chairs.”

“Your shipment enlightened their hope!” – Crossroads’ partner in Vietnam

School desks and chairs, health and medical equipment, computers, office furniture, school supplies and more, made a significant impact on the work of our partners in Vietnam, who estimate the shipment impacted the lives of around 2,300 people.

Along with educational goods, toys and medical equipment, the shipment we loaded included a quantity of excellent school desks and chairs donated by Hong Kong schools. They were able to share 100 sets of the school furniture with this village school, bringing it to life.

“Your shipment enlightened their hope!” wrote the staff. “The teachers, children and the government thank you for bringing help on time!”

We are so grateful to all who made this shipment possible, through funding, donating goods, and volunteer efforts.

ONE STUDENT’S STORY OF HOPE UNLOCKED

‘Y’ is 21 years old and although she’s an orphan, she has aged out of the orphanage system, meaning she now has to find her path in life on her own.
Thankfully, Crossroads partners are supporting and mentoring Y, and were excited to learn that she had successfully passed the entrance exams to a degree in hospitality at a big city university. She needed a computer to keep up with her studies and to start learning computer skills, but had no way to afford one herself. When Crossroads’ shipment arrived, our partners were able to give one of the computers from the container to Y, helping her study and learn, and work towards a better future for herself!

SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

Cameroon is ranked just 151 out of 189 on the Human Development Index and struggles with a number of challenges. Across the country there is limited access to healthcare and education facilities, particularly in rural areas. Economic development has been slow, and poor infrastructure prevents many communities from accessing the services that they need. Making the situation more difficult is the increasing tension and violence in Cameroon’s English speaking regions, where escalating conflict has led to the displacement of many thousands of people.

Our NGO partners in Cameroon work tirelessly across a number of fronts to help alleviate the difficulties faced by communities there. They run schooling projects including a computer training centre, support orphanages in the care of children, lead poverty reduction schemes in several areas, and work with women to empower them with the skills they need to find employment. The work that our partners carry out reaches many local communities in Cameroon, and they estimate that the goods they received in this shipment will directly benefit some 10,000 people in the coming years.

“Since we received these items, there has been a different atmosphere in our school. It has led to increased productivity and ensured we were awarded a high score in the First School Living Certificate”– Beneficiary School

(Above) New desks and chairs, donated from Hong Kong, have transformed teaching and learning for rural students.

(Above) Teachers’ offices were equipped with new computers and printers.

The goods sent in this shipment have been impactful in many ways, here are just a few key examples:

  • Hospital items were distributed to an undersupplied clinic, saving them around US$12,000
  • Chairs, desks, office supplies and canteen equipment were given to a local primary school, saving them roughly US$30,000 and allowing for the construction of two new classrooms
  • New computers allowed for the expansion of our partners training centre, increasing their intake from 700 to 1500 students

The goods that were received in this shipment will continue to have an impact on people’s lives for many years to come, and have proven even more vital in the context of Cameroon’s current tensions. We, our NGO partners, and the beneficiaries are all very grateful for your kind donations and support.

SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

The Democratic Republic of Congo has a recent history marred by civil war and conflict. Although the violence has lessened in recent years, the war has already claimed an estimated six million lives through fighting, disease and malnutrition. The severe and wide-reaching impact of the conflict means that DR Congo is ranked just 176 out of 189 on the Human Development index, and access to vital services such as healthcare and education are seriously lacking for many communities.

Our NGO partners in the region have been working to overcome some of the challenges faced by the people in their region of DR Congo. They run food security programmes, vocational training schemes and HIV/AIDS prevention classes, and coordinate capacity building support for local community organisations. Furthermore, they provide assistance to local health clinics and hospitals to ensure that adequate healthcare facilities are available to all.

“The goods have brought relief to the populations we serve, and we thank you very much for the medical, school and office equipment” – NGO Director

Included in this shipment was a wide variety of goods, reflecting the needs of the many different programmes that our partners run. Some of those goods included:

  • Toys and games for distribution to local schools
  • Education supplies, such as books and stationary
  • Clothes, shoes and basic household necessities, to support the most vulnerable families
  • Furniture and office equipment, for use in schools, health centres and our partners offices
  • White goods, such as fridges, washing machines, microwaves and fryers, to allow for the updating of facilities used by local communities

(Above 1st pic) Medical staff excited to receive goods from the shipment which will support their health centre. (Above 2nd pic) Medical staff celebrate the arrival of new hospital beds at their clinic.

(Above) Clothes are distributed amongst vulnerable members of the local community.

(Above) New fridges are installed in one of the community organisation buildings.

The goods that were sent all have the potential to produce long-lasting and profound impacts on the lives of those who benefit from them. We, our partners, and the local communities that have received these goods, are all grateful.

WHO IS THIS SHIPMENT HELPING?

This feedback has arrived. Click here to read more!

Liberia as a nation is still suffering deep social and economic wounds from a civil war that ended in the early 2000s. Violence and assaults are sadly common, with youth turning to crime because they feel hopeless.

Crossroads has sent two shipments in the past to an NGO in Liberia who reach out to children and youth at risk. When they first established, they ran programmes to solve youth crime problems, but they soon realised they had to get to the root of why youth were turning to crime. They decided that education and mentorship were the answers, helping open more doors to youth so that they wouldn’t feel like crime was the only way to survive.

Today, they run a thriving ‘Street Library’, where many of the books, toys, furnishings and technology are from Crossroads’ previous shipments. They also used computers from our last shipment to set up a computer lab to train youth in IT skills. The goods from the shipment were so strategic in furnishing and improving their projects to a high standard that the organisation secured funding from the United Nations to run an additional 6 project across Liberia. “All of this happened because of Crossroads’ support,” they wrote.

Their latest goal has been to establish a vocational training academy for young people in Liberia’s rural centre. They have the land, and have constructed the buildings needed, but they have asked Crossroads for help with goods to bring it to life. Our shipment will include goods for the new training academy, as well as more toys and games to expand their the Street Library, computers, appliances and furniture to equip their various centres, all with the goal of being able to reach more young people with education and training that helps lift them out of poverty.

New vocational training centre

Goods from this shipment will help fill this new vocational training centre with furniture, appliances and other things they need to reach out to rural youth with empowering skills training. The centre will accommodate more than 300 students at a time.

Crossroads’ previous shipment arrived just as our partners were renovating their Street Library. “The learning environment was deplorable,” they said. “Students couldn’t play educational games because of the roughness of the floor and leaking water.” Their staff fixed up the facilities and laid down carpet tiles from Crossroads’ shipment, filled the shelves with new toys and games, and immediately the centre started to draw more children. Their enrolment has already increased by 175 children per week.

IT skills for youth

“Youth are dying to become computer literate, but they do not have the financial means to get these skills,” wrote our partners.

Young people in Liberia know the opportunities that come through computer education and they know they’re missing out on skills that their peers in more developed communities take for granted.

Computers from Crossroads’ previous shipment have made possible a computer lab where young people can learn these vital skills, leading to better employment options in the future.

This shipment will include more goods for youth vocational training, helping to set up a brand new centre focused on skills training for rural youth.

Liberia snapshot

Population: 4.8 million
Capital: Monrovia
Population below international poverty line of US$1.25 per day: 64%

Liberia is Africa’s oldest republic, but it became known in the 1990s for its long-running, ruinous civil war. The conflict involved child soldiers, and it killed hundreds of thousands of people.

Significant programmes are now under way to improve issues such as clean water access, food security and education, however progress is difficult and unemployment and illiteracy remain high across the country.

SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

Despite its political stability and cultural vibrancy, Benin remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Ranking just 163 out of 189 on the Human Development Index, Benin suffers from severe underdevelopment and has unemployment rates as high as 70% amongst its young people. In many of the country’s village communities the poverty and illiteracy rates are around 60% and, with poor access to education and skills training, it is very difficult for people to break out of the poverty cycle.

Our NGO partners in the region coordinate a wide range of programmes designed to tackle the challenges faced by Benin’s poorest communities. Through supporting local schools, providing skills training to unemployed women, organising community literacy classes, and distributed much needed necessities such as clothing and bedding, our partners are working tirelessly to address the issue of poverty head-on. Their major focus is on improving access to education, as they believe that by equipping people with new skills they can empower them to pursue new opportunities and can break the poverty cycle.

“The most significant impact of the shipment is the reduction of grinding poverty, especially in poor communities and villages”– NGO Director

(Above) A man with training receives a new computer, allowing him to open a small IT services business.

The goods that were delivered in this shipment have supported the work of our partners across many of their programmes. Here are just a few examples of the impacts that they have had:

  • Classroom furniture has been donated to local schools, modernising facilities and improving the quality of their learning environments
  • Computers have been distributed to individuals who have the training to use them, allowing them to start their own small businesses and enterprises
  • Hospital beds and medical mattresses have improved the standard of care at local health centres, providing for a local population of over 7500 people
  • Toys and games were distributed at Christmas to children in the poorest communities where our partners work

(Above) Tables, chairs and kitchen utensils from the shipment, kick-started a restaurant business for this woman, who is now able to support herself with the income

(Above) A student in our partners’ educational support projects received a new desk and school kit, allowing her to continue her studies at secondary school.

The goods received in this shipment have already directly impacted an estimated 4,600 people directly, and over 10,000 indirectly. With their long life-span and careful distribution the items received by the beneficiaries in Benin will continue to have a positive impact on the lives of many people for years to come.

FURTHER IMPACT

“As a result of the shipment, we were able to contribute to a new market in a poor community. The clean water and electricity which provide this market also serve the immediate neighborhood. Thanks to this, an additional 1250 people now have access to clean water and electricity in their homes” – NGO Director

Most residents in our partners’ target communities are struggling with poverty, making it difficult to get ahead or support their families. Basic goods like furniture, clothing, electrical equipment and others can have a remarkable impact on their quality of life, like one teacher (Above 1st pic) who received a mobile phone that he can now use to stay in touch with family members living in other towns.

(Above 2nd pic) New chairs will allow this women to invite friends and family over to her home, where previously she had nowhere for them to sit.

(Above) Recreational and sports equipment from the shipment have enriched youth sports projects.

SHIPMENT FEEDBACK

In Uganda a lack of opportunity, and of understanding, have long contributed to a negative societal view of those living with disabilities. This is something that our partners in the region are working tirelessly to change.

Just outside Kampala, Uganda’s capital city, our partners run a ‘one-stop centre’ for children with disabilities. Here, they work with children and their families to provide the professional services that will ensure every child, regardless of their needs, is given the help and resources they need to thrive. They provide education, therapy, counselling, and play, all whilst engaging the community around them in support of the children’s rights and happiness, helping to break the social stigma around disability.

With an expansion project underway and a wide variety of ongoing programmes in need of resources, the shipment received from Crossroads has found immediate and timely use for our hardworking partners.

“The shipment has greatly improved the lives of children with disabilities; negative attitudes, behaviours and stigma have been reduced. Children with disabilities are now living a better and more dignified life”. – NGO director

Already we have received feedback showing how the goods from the shipment have helped, including:

  • Education and office furniture creating a more comfortable environment for children and staff alike.
  • Wheelchairs, therapy mats and other assistive devices improving the quality of therapy services.
  • Books, stationary, and games ensuring a stronger education programme.
  • Radios and media players allowing the commencement of music and dance classes.

(Above) As a result of this shipment a local primary school, who our partners work closely, were able to provide every single child with a new reading book.

(Above) Using stationery and supplies from the shipment, art and sensory stimulation classes have been able to provide benefits to a growing number of students.

(Above) Parents and members of the community are encouraged to visit the centre and engage with the children’s projects.

As our partner’s organisation continues to grow these goods, and the many more that were included in the shipment, will continue to provide a benefit to many children for many years to come.

(Above 1st pic) Therapy mattresses and assistive devices like those included in this shipment are essential to the work undertaken at our partner’s centre.  (Above 2nd pic) Just as the children at our partner’s centre have benefitted from this shipment, so too have the staff. New office furniture is enabling them to work in a more comfortable setting than ever before!
