Reaching out to Vulnerable Children and Orphans

An NGO in Tanzania is responding to the problems caused by poverty on the Kigoma region of Tanzania. The staff paint a picture of families who are unable to keep their heads above water:

“Some families do not have the minimum means to fulfil their basic needs like food, shelter, health care to children, education support…”

Tanzania_S3203_1

Life is particularly difficult in the Congolese refugee camp and surrounding area. The project is passionate about not just practical help – they currently distribute food to 180 vulnerable children – but also the promotion of gender equality, a reduction in family conflict and in the marginalization of poor young people.

They have asked for goods to help them maintain and increase their programmes, and to help with future plans for a school for refugee children and an orphanage.

Potential impact:

  • Computers for 10 classrooms
  • 500 children and women receiving clothing, shoes and toys

Shipment includes:

  • Computers for school and vocational training
  • Furniture for office and schools
  • Clothing and household goods for refugees and local communities
  • Sports equipment and toys

Tanzania_S3203_4 Seraphine (left) was an orphan but she has had great support from her foster mother (right) and from the project. After training they now run a tailoring workshop. This shipment will include equipment for use in the vocational training programmes for young people.

Tanzania_S3203_3It is hard to imagine fleeing war and terror in DR Congo, then facing fear and destitution when you are across the border. Once in Tanzania, refugees face life in a camp, with all the challenges that entails. Finding enough to eat is hard enough, and education can seem like a distant dream. This photo shows a young girl who arrived as a frightened unaccompanied refugee child and who lives in the Nyarugusu Congolese Refugees camp. The project has helped give her hope, providing her with basic necessities, and the chance to pursue her schooling. Nowadays, after classes, she sells fish at the local market.

The Crossroads shipment will include clothing for vulnerable children like this young refugee, and equipment for the local schools serving her community. Sports equipment and toys will bring some joy into their lives too!

IMG_0016In Northern Uganda, a small nursery school is a haven of peace and fun for little children who would otherwise be simply playing in the dirt. The villages in this war-torn area have suffered immeasurably over the years, and the people still battle with problems of HIV/AIDS and huge unemployment, but they are now trying to rebuild lives and livelihoods. Parents have hopes for their children beyond the subsistence farming they themselves have experienced. This nursery school received a shipment from Crossroads in 2008, receiving goods which transformed the lives of many children. They currently have 72 children attending.

As the children have grown, the school is now ready to open a primary school, and have asked Crossroads for books, computers, school furniture and uniforms, plus the equipment necessary for a first aid room. They are also looking to start vocational skills training for older pupils, and have asked for tools, sewing machines and other items to help with this.

Walking many miles to school can make it hard for children to access an education. Our partners in Zambia knew that for kids in remote villages where they operate, just getting to class can mean hours walking in difficult weather, on rocky or dusty roads. Some children miss out on school entirely, or don’t finish their education because there’s no school in their village.

zambiabus6

It was a joy, then, when a Hong Kong NGO donated an excellent van to Crossroads, which we could include in a shipment to our partners in Zambia. They’re now using it as a school bus for children in remote villages, making it that much easier to access school, and a brighter future! With enrollment expanding from 85 students to a whopping 400 at the end of 2016, the new ‘bus’ couldn’t have come at a better time.

zambiabus2

“[We were] extremely excited about the bus,” wrote the Zambian staff. “It was so exciting seeing this come out of the container to the jubilation of all the people that were part of the offloading program. A test drive was taken right away. It will be very useful to us in fulfilling our dream of enrolling more kids.”

Also included in the shipment were computers, shoes, clothes, school supplies, furniture and toys, many of which will equip new classrooms for the expanding school.

We’re proud of these children and their families for battling the odds to access education, and so grateful to all the volunteers and sponsors who made this shipment possible!

Changing lives through Education

Education in Papua New Guinea is a luxury out of reach for many children, with 40% of the population living on less than 1 US Dollar a day. The net enrolment for basic education is only 52.9%, and girls are often excluded from schooling entirely. In remote areas, there may not even be schools to go to.
This is the challenge that Crossroads’ partner is seeking to address.  This NGO is not only covering school fees for a thousand students a year, they are also actively seeking changes to establish new schools in remote areas. With an adult literacy rate of just 57% and children under 15 being 40% of PNG’s population, it is clear there is still a world of meaningful work to do. Crossroads is pleased to help with a shipment to improve their work and extend their reach.

Potential impact:

  • Hundreds of children will be able to go to school
  • Existing schools will be better equipped

 Shipment includes:

  • Primary and secondary school text books
  • Musical instruments and toys
  • Computers and computer desks for IT education

Before and after: a computer lab constructed by our partner to teach secondary students

Tende Ogul lives in a very remote area in Papua New Guinea. From the nearest road it takes an astonishing 30 days of walking ten kilometres a day to reach his little village. This didn’t stop this community leader coming to the office of our partner. As he spoke his words, he was already in tears. He said he had a dream for a primary school for his village. However, he is getting old and he may not see his dream realised. After hearing his story, our partner applied with the Provincial Government for the Primary School to be approved. After six months, Kondipi Primary School was given the approval. Ogul had waited 15 years for his dream to be realised.  A new double story classroom was built. But it did not end there. An access road was also built by a volunteer service.  120 children now attend Kondipi Primary School.  Our partner supports the children by paying their school fees and providing them with materials.
Crossroads shipment will help this NGO to furnish more schools and to provide many more children with the materials they need to study.

Education, training and health

“Education is a major problem here, since most of the children do not go to school,” wrote our partners in Uganda when requesting a shipment. “There are very few schools in the area and those which are there are in a worrying state. Many young girls end up being forced into marriage at an early age because they are not going to school.” They asked Crossroads to help them with supplies and equipment that would help not just young school students, but young adults who need job training, and also community health centres that are seriously under-resourced.

DSC_0257

“The donation of hospital beds has led to improved health at our institute and also within the community at large.”

The goods in this shipment, which included furniture, hospital beds, medical goods and school equipment, were an injection of hope into this community, where our partners are battling against poverty with few resources themselves. They told us of thousands of dollars saved by schools and health clinics, who now don’t need to purchase or upgrade equipment. “This donation saved us around US$10,285,” they said, of the medical supplies and hospital beds.

Most of the goods from the shipment simply can’t be purchased in this part of Uganda, making them all the more valuable to our partners’ work. The toys and educational aids, which are already enriching the lives of local children, will also be used to set up a child training centre where the NGO will loan out the equipment to families that can’t afford them. A vocational centre received beds, bedding and kitchenware which will allow them to support young people who stay in the residential centre while studying.

Thank you for your part in transforming the lives of so many in rural Uganda through this shipment!

Care for young children at risk

When Florence, of Uganda, used to travel to school as a young girl, her heart would break to see tiny children left alone on the streets, or carried around with their mother while she worked. “It kept me wondering if it was a kind of imprisonment,” Florence reflects, “robbing children of their right to play.”

Now many years later, Florence has realised her dream of opening a day care for children like the ones she saw on the streets. Instead of wandering on their own or being locked up at home while their mothers worked long, difficult hours, these little ones now have the chance to play and learn in a safe and stimulating environment.

S3052 (4)
Sadly, though, she realized that once children were graduating day care at 3, she would too often see them back on the streets idle during the day while parents were at work. It was only once her NGO received Crossroads’ shipment, filled with school materials, toys, furniture and other things, that Florence could successfully open the next stage of their work, a preschool for 3-5 year olds.

Crossroads’ goods are now benefitting the day care, preschool, nearby youth centres, a health centre and the impoverished families of school children.

“Now we have expanded to a Kindergarten section to help 3-5 year olds because we have all the materials to run school classes. All this was prompted by your generous donations.”

Florence commented that the quality of the furniture in the shipment, such as the beds, chairs and table, was superior to anything she could source locally, and that many of the toys and school materials aren’t available in Uganda at all. She estimates that the furniture, school supplies and uniforms alone saved the organisation US$17,000 out of their budget.

There is no doubt that this shipment has made an impact on the lives of young children in this part of Uganda. We are so grateful to all involved in making it possible.

Investing in education

“How many computers do you have in your computer lab?” asked our team member, visiting a school we’re helping in Ghana. “Not one,” replied the teacher. There was a pause. “Then how do you teach the kids computer skills?” The teacher smiled and explained they were hoping someone might bring a mouse, or a keyboard or other parts so they could set something up.SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

Education is an uphill battle for children in the district of Ghana where our partner NGO is based. “A significant number of children in these community schools are sitting under trees and sheds,” wrote staff when they first applied. In the area, nearly 75% of the population over 15 can’t read or write in any language, keeping people locked in poverty.

“As a result of the shipment, we were able to open our new ICT centre.”

When this shipment arrived, staff reported on the incredible investment that the computers, furniture, school supplies and other goods have made into their work. “Until the arrival of the shipment from Crossroads Foundation, our organisation had only one desktop computer. We needed to pay for usage of our warehouse, buy stationery, do printing and rent chairs to host meetings. However, the situation has now changed significantly. The [goods] and the container itself are saving us USD10,000 per year as we no longer need to hire or pay for using them.”

The schools likewise were overwhelmed. One school for disadvantaged children has now been able to open two new classes to cope with demand, thanks to goods from the shipment. At another school, the primary 5 and 6 students previously sat on the floor, but now each student has a chair and desk. At yet another school, students were learning about computers in a theoretical sense, but had none to use themselves. Now, students can put their learning into practice on real computers in their own school!

All the schools reported increased student attendance following the distribution of goods. We’re thankful to our sponsors for making it possible to invest in the education of Ghana’s children through this shipment.

DSC01161Kato doesn’t know why his parents abandoned him. They left their home in rural Uganda one day in 2009, bound for the capital, and simply never came back. Overnight, the little boy was left completely alone, seemingly forgotten by the world and by those who should have cared for him most.

When local aid workers discovered Kato, he was homeless and 12 years old. “He had no food, no clothing, or shelter,” they told us. They brought Kato to their orphanage where he started school, and today, he’s one of their success
stories. “He’s very happy and so bright,” wrote the staff. “He’s the school football team’s goalkeeper and he wants to be a professional footballer! We treat him like our son.”

Kato’s journey from abandoned, frightened little boy, to an educated teenager with such mighty dreams, is repeated over and over with the children at this home. To date they have reached 680 children with shelter, education and love, helping them grow to thriving, contributing adults.DSC02076

Crossroads shipped to Kato’s orphanage, including goods like a huge amount of school equipment, play equipment and supplies, even uniforms and sports goods for Kato’s soccer team, but also goods for their offices, the local medical clinics and the secondary school. “This shipment has changed us for the better,” they said. “The things we would have done in five to ten years, we are now going to achieve within two years.

We are going to save over US $27,000. This money will help us build more classrooms, pay our staff, treat the sick children as well as buy more land for our future projects. Some of our members shed tears of joy when receiving these goods as they could not believe that the goods were given to us free of charge by people who don’t know us but care so much.”

The seven single mothers were waiting in a social service centre in Shatin when Crossroads staff visited to follow up on the furniture and electrical appliances they had received from our warehouse. Living on social welfare benefits, and with children to care for, these seven women don’t have an easy life, but when we met them, they were laughing and smiling, and eager to talk.

They spoke of how they have banded together, over the past eight years, to support one another, share with each other and encourage each other. Middle aged, with varied levels of education and training, some of them have found it difficult to find part time jobs that would allow them to earn enough to support their families without assistance, so they rely on social welfare payments to survive.

Instead of staying at home, though, and dwelling on their difficulties, the women decided they wanted to look outwards, at what they could do for the community. They regularly support a group of blind people, who live in even more difficult circumstances than themselves, and take them on outings giving friendship and support and helping how they can.

It was a joy to be able to support these women, who have such huge hearts for those around them, with some of the goods they needed for their own homes: computers, rice cookers, microwaves, towels, clothes and more. One woman was excited to now own a reading light, being able to read books in the evening without disturbing the family.  Others were happy to receive a microwave, so they can prepare food quickly and save time to work or to take care of their children.

We’re inspired to see people in such difficult circumstances turn to support each other and their neighbours in need, even with what little they have.  “Truly, these wonderful women in Shatin deserve praise,” said a Crossroads staff member who met them. “Thank you, ladies, for being seven silent heroes who are helping a world in need!”
