Providing shelter in the hardest circumstances

For many years, our partners in Ukraine have been actively involved in bridging the gap between developed cities and impoverished rural villages. Prior to the Ukraine conflict, we had sent multiple shipments to support their work.
From the beginning of the conflict, refugees have been flooding to other parts of Ukraine and to Poland.  Material support is vital in such a precarious time.
Refugees were living in empty, abandoned houses or schools or even clinic waiting areas. All these places need to be equipped and adapted to accommodate for this “new normal”. However, this places additional strain on communities that already struggle to meet the needs of their own residents, and the arrival of the shipment was welcomed with grateful thanks. It was a challenge for the goods to reach the places where they were needed, but the perseverance of our partners made it happen.

Clothes, beds, mattresses were distributed among collective shelters for refugees… People come only in their own clothing.”NGO director

Above: There were 11 oil filled heaters in the shipment which were distributed to a boarding house for children with disabilities and refugees living in local villages. Warm clothing is also a must in the harsh Ukrainian winter.

Above: Toys mean the world to children who have been torn from their homes, as families are unable to bring more than one or two suitcases with them.  Creative play helps them adapt.

Below: Beds, bedding and furniture helped to kit out the empty places provided for refugees from war-torn areas.  There were shovels and a chain saw in the shipment which helped with the refurbishment of some areas.

Ukraine Snapshot

Population: 44.3 million (2023 estimate)
Capital: Kyiv

Following the break-up of the USSR in 1991, independent Ukraine spent the following decades working to rebuild itself as a democratic country with a free economy.  During those years, larger cities forged ahead but many rural communities found themselves left behind.  In 2022, more than 11 million people have fled from the east of the country, with about 6 million leaving their homeland and more than 5 million finding “temporary” accommodation in less vulnerable areas inside Ukraine.
