Helping those in dire need

The war-torn nation of Syria has endured more than a decade of devastation, with its innocent citizens helplessly caught in the crossfire. Life in this country has been marked by unimaginable hardships, and just when it seemed like things couldn’t get any worse, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the area.

We are very thankful to be able to support our partners serving the vulnerable population on the ground. This shipment included much needed blankets, hygiene kits, warm winter clothing and sleeping bags.

On the right is a photo of Z receiving some donated diapers. She, along with her husband and their three young children, is from Aleppo, a city that bore the brunt of the conflict. Their home was empty, lacking mattresses, windows, and even a door. Z’s husband struggled to find a stable source of income to provide basic necessities for their family of five, who lived within four bare walls.

Z found herself unable to cope with the overwhelming weight of it all, eventually reaching a breaking point where despair consumed her. Z found out about a distribution of clothes and baby diapers in an NGO nearby and went to ask for help. A compassionate member of the NGO staff noticed something amiss about Z and gently inquired about the injury to her wrist.

After some time, Z opened up about her immense internal struggles. In that vulnerable moment, the staff assured her that there was hope even in the darkest of times. The NGO was able to refer Z to a medical doctor for further follow-ups and continue to financially support her family.

Goods distribution is already life-giving —an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty for some and provide warmth and dignity for others. What is even more valuable is that it serves as a means for NGOs to reach out to those desperately in need, those not knowing how or where to ask for help.  Time after time, we have witnessed how our partners have been able to identify those in need within a community through the distribution of much-needed goods, and we are deeply grateful to be a part of this impactful work.

After the earthquake, many people were left with almost nothing, and the distribution of warm clothing was very welcome.

The shipment contained many boxes of absolutely essential hygiene items, soap, towels and sanitary pads, as well as lots of blankets and warm winter clothing. One woman received a walker which she had been dreaming of since her legs were wounded by a bomb and she expressed her gratitude with tears in her eyes and a big hug for the project workers who brought this gift to her.
