A poignant 'x-perience' that allows you to encounter HIV/AIDS for yourself, together with its complex causes and effects.

X-perience HIV/AIDS first hand!

An AIDS clinic in a refugee camp

A new x-perience has opened at Crossroads' Global Village. We invite you to encounter HIV/AIDS for yourself in a simulated way. You could x-perience the risk of:

  • an African child soldier, abducted and forced to fight at seven, who is exposed to possible contamination through blood flow in conflict.
  • a Hong Kong student, who, in the pressure of daily life, makes leisure choices that place him at risk.
  • an Asian teenager, tricked into prostitution through family poverty, who is forced to work until illness leaves her unemployable.
  • an Eastern European mother, in a remote rural area, who needs a life-saving transfusion, though the blood may be contaminated.

The AIDS X-perience allows you to 'walk through' the life stories of these individuals. At the end, as a participant, you will discover whether or not you are HIV positive in this simulation.

We, at the Global Village, however, do not believe HIV/AIDS can be seen in isolation. It needs to be seen in relation to the global forces that help drive it: poverty, for example, drug usage, poor medical facilities, the sex trade, the impact of conflict, rape and other challenges in our dysfunctional world.

The AIDS X-perience at Crossroads is open to both adults and children. A minimum age of 14 is recommended, although, at parents’ or teachers’ discretion, this can be discussed.

Each life story should last approximately 30 minutes, though participants are welcome to take longer, should they choose.

The AIDS X-perience has become another of Crossroads' Global Village programmes. Other Life X-periences offer simulated encounters with poverty, world trade, refugee needs, world hunger and more. For more information, visit www.crossroads.org.hk/lifex-perience

We are grateful to Operation Santa Claus for sponsoring this X-perience. Both its news groups, RTHK Radio 3 and the South China Morning Post have helped raise funds and awareness through their media coverage. You can hear a story about the AIDS X-perience at the following link:

Much has been written about AIDS, but it can be difficult to find the human beings behind the statistics. Crossroads seeks to bring alive the human suffering of those who face, daily, the unwelcome, but unrelenting, reality of this modern-day heartbreak.
